“I’m sure you’ve noticed by now,” Marinn said as we walked. “My clan is not what it once was.”

“What happened?” I asked as Zan tried to comfort our squealing son.

“Many of our alphas left to form their own clans deep in the forest. Few alphas, aging omegas and females. There are few children here.” He smiled sadly. “So please excuse the stares. It’s been a long time since a baby has been in our midst.”

A group of older women came out and gathered around Zan and Ryfa, doting their affection on the boy. Their tired faces lit up with an eager energy as they smiled down at Ryfa, and they began to talk to Zan about their techniques of motherhood. I left Zan to talk with them, and walked around the village with Marinn.
